Atkins Diet Quick Hits – How do I start?

June 10, 2010 by

I am starting a new series of videos based upon the questions or comments I have received either privately or in the comments section. Each of these videos will be targeted to answering that question or issue in short, less than 3 minutes video. I am hoping that these videos can be used as a Frequently Asked Question about the Atkins Diet or Low Carb in general. In this video, I deal with a question I receive often. How do I start or restart the diet? I come up with three specific recommendations: 1.) Get the junk out of your house. There is no reason to start with cravings staring you in the face. 2.) Get and read the book. The book I mean is either the low carb book of choice or Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002). 3.) Hit the low carb recipe sites, like Linda’s Low Carb, and browse the Induction friendly recipes. Make a menu for the week and go shopping. The last half of this viewer’s question was how long to do the diet. I somewhat answered this already in the last video, but my answer is always “forever. There is no “after” on the Atkins Diet.” I hope you like this series of upcoming videos.

@XxVanillaSinXx People can lose hair during any dramatic weight loss or change in diet. The loss if it happens is generally short-lived, and most people actually report much healthier skin and hair while on the diet.

  2. XxVanillaSinXx says:

Is it true you lose your hair on this diet?

Don’t do it as I did it, even though I lost loads of weight and felt great for many months, like 9, I have developed Calcium pyrophosphate crystals = due to a reaction with the phosphoric acid in meat and Ca in my bone. I was eating huge amounts of lean meat (almost only!). RDA = 700mg phosphorus, and I was eating a pheasant = 750 pack prawns = 400 4Eggs = 344 in one day Twice RDA. If I had ate fatty meat, butter & half the eggs, fat & half prawns I would not of caused this! EAT FAT!

  4. bowulf says:

@NICKI525 The quick answer is yes you deduct fiber from the total number of carbohydrates as fiber does not impact one’s blood sugars.

Good luck, and way to make the choice for being healthy!

  5. NICKI525 says:

Not enough space to finish my question, When I cook with Coconut flour, which
I did today, do we deduct the number of FIBER GRAMS to end up with a NET CARBOHYRATE CONTENT?

  6. NICKI525 says:

    Hi,

I started the Atkins diet 3 months ago and lost 15 pounds quite easily, never being hungry but I did go through the flu period, weakness, rather tired most of the time and got a bit scared but knew from experience years ago that this diet does work. Now I want to make Atkins MY WAY of life, tired of YOYO dieting and being hungry most ofo the time. My question is this: I am making a recipie with Coconut flour. I want to know DO WE DEDUCT THE NUMBER OF FIBER GRAMS FROM THE CARBOHYDRATES

  7. MrZainb says:

what should i eat i mean brown bread cereal chapati rice?

  8. 403766 says:

    @bowulf

    Thank you bowulf!

  9. bowulf says:

@403766 I had no idea what quorn was, but found out it was a brand of meatless food. Here were the top ingredients in most of their food:
“Mycoprotein (51%), rehydrated egg white, onions, textured wheat protein (wheat protein, wheat starch)”

The textured wheat protein and starch would make it only acceptable for really late stage Ongoing Weight Loss Phase. (where you add whole grains back into the diet)

  10. 403766 says:

Is quorn okay for the atkins diet?

  14. Forsure3333 says:

@bowulf “You ate 3000? Calories a day, and you did or did not gain weight? ”

That’s correct. I did at first when I weighted like 180. In a few weeks, I gained 17 pounds. I kept eating about the same number of calories and reached a plateau at 197. I’m 5’8. How many calories do you assume I was burning every day?

  15. bowulf says:

@Forsure3333 What are asking? You ate 3000 Calories a day, and you did or did not gain weight? What was your calculated BMR for that time period?

  16. Forsure3333 says:

I remember weighting at my highest record weight, 197 pounds. I was eating over 3000 calories, but never weighted more. Considering I was very lazy at that time, I was probably burning 2000 calories a day. So that would make an extra 1000 calories each day. The obvious question is: Where did the extra calories go?

  17. ilovetheniqab says:

Ummm………doofus, what is he selling? NOTHING. He is posting this to help those of us who are or become a part of Atkins Low Carb Bulletin Board and for others interested in following low carb and finding out about it. Thanks, Kent! Been an ADBB member for several years and you inspire all of us! Keep it going!

  18. bowulf says:

Seriously – walk away from the keyboard…

I have zero crap to sell. The book I refer to is by someone else, and I have no pecuniary benefit in ppl like Amazon or bookstores selling it.

If you want to find out about the diet, watch my other 100 videos. Any of them is a good place to start.

Otherwise, find someone else to amuse your troll self.

  19. Neroburningyou says:

this guy only wants to sell his crap … he gives no fucking informations about the diet … he only wants to sell his crappy fucking book for a shitload of money

  22. believinatkins says:

  23. bowulf says:

Yes, you can. Just be aware of the caffeine though… (it only affects a subset of followers)

  24. believinatkins says:

Kent can i have green tea during the induction phase?

  25. bowulf says:

I have a “should kids do low carb?” video, which talks about this issue. The short answer is yes they should restrict their intake of “whites” (sugars, starches, flour, etc.) and decrease their overall carbohydrate intake. To do the full blown Atkins starting at 20g per day, it takes a really mature mind to understand the lifelong journey. It might be just enough to do the first step (like Atkins Maintenance phase) and start from there.
