His question was on the amount of what he was eating. I took his question and ran with it though to a different topic. Starvation mode dieting is never good, and similar is zero carb dieting. I am pretty convinced that for most people going zero carb is an unnecessary step. Sure there are some very metabolically resistant and / or people suffering with hyperinsulinemia. For the most part, most people should be getting their veggies in and not fearing adding back a reasonable amount of carbs. Trying to discover what the magic number per day can certainly be trying, but your health will appreciate it. Thinking zero carbs is the answer also misses number of things: * phytonutrients without getting more chemicals * fiber-rich vegetables * carbs present in other non-veggie sources, like nuts, eggs, or cheese Unless you are really hyper sensitive to carbs, enjoy the variety of nature and food selection.

It is often not on the Acceptable Foods List or filled with ingredients not on the list. This is when I get into the discussion why the first phase of the diet is more than just reduce your carbs to less than 20g per day. Here are the main goals of any Induction phase: 1.) Get into ketosis and see its benefits 2.) Get used to the food selection 3.) Control one’s eating habits and prove that control to yourself 4.) Set stage for future weight loss and ability to detect future problem foods when you readd them later Not following the Induction rules and the Acceptable Foods List erodes the guarantee of your success. Atkins Induction Rules: www.atkins.com Atkins Induction Acceptable Foods List: www.atkins.com You can also watch my Induction videos to see my take on Induction Phase.

If you have not seen Part 1, please watch it here: www.youtube.com The last video dealt with case damning the existing treatment or recommendations to follow a high carb diet managed with ever increasing doses of insulin. This video deals with the evidence for rather managing it with a low carb lifestyle. There are two great studies for advocating this method. 1:) Dietary carbohydrate restriction in type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome: time for a critical appraisal Nutrition and Metabolism(Lond) 2008; 5: 9. Numerous authors including Richard Bertstein, Mary Vernon, Jeff Volek, Eric Westman www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov Conducted Multi-center trial in which 63 obese men and women were randomly assigned to either diet, 21 Low Carb, 21 Control, 21 High Carb for a one year study. This discussion focuses on type 2 diabetes but many of the principles will apply to metabolic syndrome and possibly to type 1 as well[6,7]. 1. Carbohydrate restriction improves glycemic control, the primary target of nutritional therapy and reduces insulin fluctuations. 2. Carbohydrate-restricted diets are at least as effective for weight loss as low-fat diets. 3. Substitution of fat for carbohydrate is generally beneficial for markers for and incidence of CVD. 4. Carbohydrate restriction improves the features of metabolic syndrome. An important idea guiding current medical thinking is that clustering of …

Like any diet, water is important to make you fill full, keep you hydrated for exercise, and to quench your thirst. Its importance can not be stressed enough in a low carb diet though as its additional benefits, such as: * its role in metabolizing fat * its role in reducing Induction Flu symptoms * its role in flushing the toxins and by-products (like ketones) from the system through your kidneys I deal with the quesiton of how much is required per day and even make some suggestions on how to make it more palatable for those hydro-phobic people like I was. My suggestion is to look at water intake like a necessity similar to exercise. For somethings you just need to get it over with and get on with life. Eventually, it won’t seem as bad as it might when you are first starting, and given the prospect of lower than optimal weight loss, why wouldn’t you drink it? Thanks again for all the views and comments.

The annotated recipes are simply the best! Without any further adieu, here’s the recipe: HEATHER’S POTSTICKER PATTIES Cabbage Mixture: 1.5 pounds green cabbage 1 small-medium onion, chopped, 2 cloves garlic 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon granular Splenda 2 tablespoons oil Meat Mixture: 2 pound ground pork 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 eggs 5 green onions, minced optional Dash hot sauce 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil Shred the cabbage in your food processor. To get really fine shreds, you can add the chopping blade as well. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large wok or skillet over medium heat. Add cabbage mixture ingredients to the skillet and fry until the cabbage is wilted, and begins to stick to the bottom of the pan. Remove the mixture from the heat. Add the meat mixture ingredients in a large bowl. Mix with with the cabbage mixture until well-incorporated. Take 4-5 oz scoops of the mixture, and form rough patties with them. This should make roughly 14 patties. Cook in skillet or George Foreman Grill for about 3-4 minutes per side. Nutrition Ingredients: (per patty) 196 Calories, 14.8g Fat, 2.9 Total Carbs (1g Fiber), 12.5g Protein

The first answer is “is it really a stall?”, “Have you lost any inches not just pounds?”, and “Have you not lost in more than 4 weeks?” If you satisfy these above question, this video is for you. Here is list of reasons that I go into in this video: 1.) Eating too many carbs (hidden carbs / underestimating) 2.) Undereating – starvation mode dieting 3.) Dehydration 4.) Overeating 5.) Too little exercise 6.) Stress 7.) Food Sensitivities / Candida In the next video I will touch upon your response. Here are some other good low carb resources: lowcarb4life.sugarbane.com www.lowcarb.ca They as well as years of helping others assisted me in making video

He was following the diet religiously and working out fiendishly in the gym. In that time, he sweated the potassium of his body and put himself into a hypokalemic state. He thought he was having a heart attack. The post script to his tale is he found out what it was and wanted to be sure others knew as well. That was why this video was created. Hypokalemia health.google.com www.nlm.nih.gov en.wikipedia.org What is Potassium Good for? * important for neuron (brain and nerve) functioning * maintaining osmotic and pH balance – electrolyte * fluid balance * heart, kidney and adrenal functions * preventing muscle contraction Recommended daily intake of over 4-5000mg. Is it a common problem? Biochemical abnormalities of the ketogenic diet in children. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov This study discovered serum levels of sodium, potassium, and calcium were similarly unaltered in humans consuming a ketogenic diet. What causes a hypokalemia? * Diuretics, Stimulant Laxatives or Eating Disorders (Bulimia) * Excessive Sweating / Extreme exercise * Diarrhea * Diseases that affect the kidney’s ability to retain potassium (for example, Cushing syndrome) * Surgical procedures to shorten the intestines where Potassium is absorbed * Extremely rarely poor diet In the case of Atkins or most diets, the initial state is diuretic with the loss of glycogen which can temporarily influence electrolyte levels. This …
