Atkins Diet: Low Carb Fried Chicken

In this cooking video, I detail how to make one of my staples of the diet — low carb fried chicken. You don’t have to give up the joy of fried chicken, and contrary to low fat diets, you can eat the skin too! I have fried chicken at least once a week almost. Chicken has a great amount of protein as well as delicious fat in the skin. I display 2 of the 3 methods that are among the acceptable coatings for chicken or chicken-fried foods (like Country Fried Steaks): * Parmesan Cheese – Induction friendly * Carbquik breading — I typically buy mine from Netrition or Amazon. www.amazon.com * Crushed Pork Rinds. ** not shown Just run the pork rinds through a food processor to crush the rinds into smaller pieces. You would be surprised by how tasty this is, and how little pork rinds flavor there is remaining. I had intended to show this method as well, but Wal-mart wasn’t selling them anymore. Here is the recipe for the breading: * 1 cup of Carbquik flour * 2 TBS Paprika * 1 TBS Black Pepper * Dashes of Cayenne Pepper, Chili Pepper, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Poultry Seasoning Thanks for watching my videos and subscribing for those that have. You guys are the best to keep me motivated.

    @alexhere14 You’re out of date. Low carb is proven to be the most effective diet there is. Low carb effectively means high fat. It’s something you have to come to terms with that fat isn’t bad for you and carbs are.

    @AmyCelticProductions I am very glad you like the recipe. I know getting fried chicken back into my diet after years of deprivation and believing it was bad for me made me happy.

    I think I am in love with you! And I mean that in a totally Fried Chicken kind of way! I LOVE FRIED CHICKEN and thought that was something I was going to give up for the rest of my life (I am diabetic, Atkins is not a diet for me, but a life long eating plan) THANK YOU FOR THIS RECIPE!

    @mojoesbean I hear you. Going Low Carb forces you to re-evaluate some old recipes and they may turn out even better than before. I know pre-Atkins I rarely ever made fried chicken (perceived unhealthy and commercial ones were “good enough”). Now I know what fried chicken should really taste like. I hope you try some of my other recipes, and good luck!

    If you are seeing Induction flu symptoms, just know they are temporary.

    This video is FANTASTIC. I recently fried chicken with no flour because we were out and I may not go back flour coated chicken. It was SO good. Your way looks good to and I am gonna try it soon. Keep up the good work. I have started ATKINS 2 days ago and am doing a video diary on Youtube. I like that the foods can be interesting instead of eating the same meals all the time.

    @alexhere14 Let’s see I ate this exact meal usually once a week or more, and LOST 211 pounds. What’s unhealthy the fat? the cheese? Why? because my cholesterol might go up? My cholesterol, triglycerides, and arterial plaque all decreased dramatically. Sure I could eat roasted chicken or turkey, and it may be tasty. It however is not any healthier.

    What exactly isn’t diety about a food that enabled me to lose weight, increase my performance/energy, and eliminate all health risk factors?

  7. alexhere14 says:

    Deep fried chicken lots unhealthy with that cheese your adding then all that oil its not really diety at all? perhaps just the chicken breast grilled with herbs? i just dont see how this can help you lose weight?

    @MysteryUnexplained Thanks for the help! For about two weeks now, I was doing well eating healthy and all and losing weight. But when I started Induction (2 days ago), I was having hardcore cravings and I ended up binging on McDonalds!!! I want to give up.

  9. bowulf says:

    @MysteryUnexplained KFC Grilled Chicken is loaded with MSG, which isn’t the best for you, and has modified food starch, but in terms of its carbs, it is reasonably ok. I wouldn’t have it during Induction, but afterwords as an occasional treat, you can.

  10. MysteryUnexplained says:

    I’m subscribing. This sounds great, especially when it’s deep fried! I have a question: Can you eat KFC’s grilled chicken? Is that any good for the diet? Thanks, help would be appreciated.

  11. bowulf says:

    @campbpar Did just that a few days ago — best fried chicken breast in a long time…

  12. campbpar says:

    @bowulf Eat up.

  13. thespiswolf says:

    “and the other thing is after breading put the chicken in the fridge? or freezer for 5-20 minutes”

    That’s the one thing I haven’t done. I will try it tonight, thanks!

  14. bowulf says:

    @thespiswolf A little coating will come off. You can’t help that, but you can do a couple things to help the situation. Pat the chicken and the breading to ensure it is on firmly, and the other thing is after breading put the chicken in the fridge or freezer for 5-20 minutes (shorter times in the freezer). That’ll help the coating stick to the chicken even more, and then lay the chicken gently into the oil with tongs as opposed to dropping it.

  15. thespiswolf says:

    Every time I try this in my deep fryer, most of the coating comes off because it sticks to the basket. What am I doing wrong?

  16. bowulf says:

    @campbpar Nor is it a short term change, which is why Atkins is ideal for getting healthy and losing weight.

  18. bowulf says:

    @7spear It all depends one the seasoning, but you did get what you paid for the video. If that prevents you from eating the chicken every again, it’ll just lower the demand and thereby the cost for me.

  19. 7spear says:

    @7spear ever*

  20. 7spear says:

    @bowulf
    I meant the cover of this video. Chickens aren’t suppose to be THAT brown/dark.

  21. bowulf says:

    @7spear Not sure… broken taste buds?

  22. 7spear says:

    Why does it make me not want to eat chicken every again?

  23. bowulf says:

    @FORCEDANARCHY You have no idea what my shopping or hunting habits are. So go run along and find a self-grown berry to eat… I will happily eat my local butcher’s steaks and as the time comes harvesting game as well. My, my what angst the meat deprived have…

  24. FORCEDANARCHY says:

    @bowulf Going to the supermarket and buying dead animals that were caged and fattened with God knows what is really in the spirit of those original hunters that you claim to be following.

  25. bowulf says:

    @FORCEDANARCHY Wow way to start with a non sequitur. Actually it makes complete sense, and people have been eating this way since time in memorial. There can’t anything more natural than actually eating meat as people were HUNTER gatherers first not farmers.

    As for being healthy and looking good, I can only let my doctor, 6 years of great annual physicals, wife, and race results speak for me. They brag more about my state of health and beauty better than I could.
